Print Media:
Doing it Yourself

With computer access and even a cheap inkjet printer, you can create your own quality, print media. I tend to make all of my own print items like brochures, business cards, posters, postcards and labels. With a descent printer and some specialty papers your home made media can look great.

I use Microsoft Publisher for most of my projects. There are some templates you can work from if you don't quite have the creative eye. For example, you can create a sharp looking brochure using a Publisher design which will have a particular theme or style. Publisher provides templates with that same theme or style for posters, business cards, stationary, etc. You can have coordinating print media with a simple mouse click.

Next, I would encourage to include some pictures, if it's appropriate. A digital camera can be your best friend when creating your own print media. I would much rather use images of my ministry kids rather than stock photos. It will attract much more attention from your own congregation when they see actual church members in the media. Remember to have clear, close-up photos. A picture is just a waste of space if you can recognize what or who you are looking at.

Finally, you can do some good things with plain paper, but if you really want to make an impression, you'll need some specialty paper. This might mean the paper is heavier (or thicker), glossier, a different color or perforated. My ministry brochures are printed on an inexpensive inkjet printer, however I use a special brochure paper. It has a photo finish which makes the photos look great and it's also pre-scored to make the folding crisp and clean. Here in Texas you can pick up specialty papers are various office supply stores.
