Specialty Puppetry
There are so many fantastic things you can do with puppets. Don't be limited with a sock puppet and cardboard box stage. This section will highlight some incredible specialty puppetry ideas and styles.
Black Light Puppetry
One of my very favorite styles of puppetry is black light puppets. We have
several black light puppets ranging from people puppets, a snake, creatures and
a couple pairs of gloves. You can do so much with this art. You will need ample
black lights to light your performance area. I have three small black lights
that I hang on the inside, front of my puppet stage. These lights are available
at a variety of stores and online sites. The biggest key is to being able to
block out the light in the room you are performing in. The darker the better.
Don't get to close to the lights with your puppets, or you will get darks spots
on the puppet. There are a couple of books out on the topic (listed on the
previous puppetry page). Be careful what you are wearing, even when behind a
curtain, a white shirt can shine through the material. I've got some black hoods
with mesh over the face that I picked up for about $1.00 after Halloween here in
the States. These hoods totally black out your face, but let you
see out clearly. They can be a little expensive if bought from puppetry
suppliers. When building props
or making costumes, always check your material under a black light. Some
fluorescent looking materials will not glow under black light.
